This significant project was commissioned by Inner West Council and saw the iconic and much-loved Dawn Fraser Baths undergo a significant redevelopment. Since being built in 1882, the local community has widely used the heritage-listed baths, particularly Australia’s oldest active swimming club – the Balmain Amateur Swimming and Life Saving Club. The baths are the oldest remaining example of a fully enclosed tidal pool in Sydney Harbour and are named in honour of the club’s most famous member, Olympian Dawn Fraser. Designed by TKD Architects, the project saw the baths’ central pavilion and boardwalk raised 1.25 metres to accommodate rising sea levels and the construction of new recycled timber pavilions and amenities kiosk and lighting towers. After having previously completed the council’s award-winning Emanuel Tsardoulias library, designed by TKD Architects, Belmadar was proud to be able to preserve this critical structure for generations to come.
